I wake up in Tanner’s arms, wanting to purr as I lay next to his huge, powerful body. I shift a little, and his eye opens.

“Do you have to go to work today?”

He shakes his head. “I arranged for my second-in-command to take over for a day. The academy took all my time in the first five years, but I want to train Kevin as my replacement. As long as there’s no emergencies…”

I beam. “Wow. You took the day off just for me?”

“Just for you,” he smiles. “In truth, the eighty-hour work weeks are a younger man’s game. I’ve been wanting to pass the torch and focus on something else.”

Something else. Could he possibly mean… Me?

We get up and I brush my teeth. My luggage arrived in the night and was placed at the front door.

Tanner makes me a huge omelet and I eat it gratefully.

I’m so curious.

“Um, so, about what I asked you last night…”

He takes a bite and swallows.

“About why I’m single?”

“Yeah,” I nod.

He considers. “You’re the first woman since I came back from combat who’s really made me feel something. That, and I’ve got an old-fashioned style.”

“An old-fashioned style?”

He nods.

“I believe a man should be strong and capable of protecting his woman and children. That he should be able to lead his family forward and live a life worthy of respect. I don’t believe in idle hookups and playing games. Emily, if you’re going to be with me, know that I’m serious.”

I sip my orange juice, feeling nervous.

I never thought past how safe he makes me feel.

“And women aren’t into that?”

“I can be intense. I believe firmly in domestic discipline.”

“What’s that?”

“It means having a firm hand. It means acting in a way deserving of respect, and getting it. It means standards of behavior that have to met, and punishments for not meeting those standards.”

Sometimes I feel so lost… But when I’m with Tanner, I feel like I’m on the right path.

“I’ve never heard of anyone living like that.”

“It’s not common anymore. Nowadays couples fight over little things. Things are left unsaid, things are left to fester. A small transgression can turn into a big fight and argument. I want things out in the open. Emily, I want you. I want you to be mine. I’ll protect you. I’ll keep you safe. And I’ll help you become the best version of yourself you can be.”

He’s a walking, talking embodiment of respect and strength.

I shake my head. “Tanner, your job! If anyone found out about us, you’d be ruined!”

He smiles. “No one will find out. You’re safe here. You’re my little secret.”

I bite my lip. “What you were talking about… I think I might like it. I sometimes… I do things, and I regret it the next day, and it just weighs on me forever.”

We finish our food, and he puts the plates in the dishwasher.

“Could you make us some coffee?”

“Sure.”

I make coffee and pour two steaming cups. It feels natural to bring him a hot, steaming mug. I enjoy the feeling of doing things for him.
